Rodent Identification & Prevention

What are rodents?

Rodents live worldwide and, in most cases, close to people. They are prolific breeders and can quickly take over any property, making them formidable pests to deal with. Common species of rodents living throughout our area of Las Vegas include mice, rats, porcupines, chipmunks, squirrels, and beavers. Despite the wide variety of sizes and shapes that rodents come in, these mammals all have two things in common: continuously growing front incisors and a lack of canine teeth. To prevent their teeth from overgrowing, rodents gnaw on any object they come across – causing a lot of damage in the process!a chipmunk sitting on a tree branch outside of a home in enterprise nevada

Are rodents dangerous?

Their sharp front teeth alone make rodents dangerous pests. They create a lot of damage inside structures by chewing through wires, pipes, drywall, insulation, flooring, and more. Their chewing habits can even lead to fires and water damage. Rodents will also contaminate food, introduce bacteria, and chew through clothing, furniture, and other personal items. Salmonella, hantavirus, and rat bite fever are examples of diseases spread by rodents. Additionally, rodents introduce parasites like mites, ticks, and fleas into your home or business.

Why do I have a rodent problem?

Over the years, as our habitats have merged, many of these animals have come to somewhat rely on people for their basic needs and will take advantage of any source of food, water, or shelter we provide them. Our properties offer safe shelter, while our gardens, trash cans, compost bins, pet food, and bird feeders provide them with sources of food.

Where will I find rodents?

When living outside, rodents will nest and hide in a variety of locations such as tall grasses, dense vegetation, areas along riverbanks, under woodpiles, and decks or foundations. When they find their way into your home or business, they will retreat to hard-to-reach locations – hiding during the day and emerging at night to forage for food. Rodents usually nest within 10-30 feet of their food sources; common indoor hiding spots include behind walls, under floors, and above ceilings. They will also nest behind large appliances, in cabinets, and inside upholstered furniture.
