Pigeon Identification & Prevention

What are pigeons?

Pigeons are a very common species of pest bird that live throughout southern Nevada. These birds are common in both rural and urban areas. Adult pigeons grow to between 11 and 15 inches long and weigh around 13 ounces. Pigeons have grayish-pink beaks and light gray bodies; their heads, shoulders, and breasts are darker gray. Some pigeons, depending on the species, may have rust or metallic colored feathers across their breasts, necks, and heads. Adult pigeons also have two dark bands across their wings and another across their tails.

Are pigeons dangerous?

Pigeons pose significant dangers to both people and property. They carry and transmit a variety of dangerous diseases such as salmonella and toxoplasmosis to people through their feces. Pigeons also have a type of fungi that grows in their feces which can cause histoplasmosis. In addition, their droppings – aside from being unsightly – create slip and fall hazards. Also, when pigeons invade your property, ectoparasites that live on their bodies such as fleas, mites, and ticks are introduced. Finally, a pigeon’s nest and feces will damage roof eaves, gutters, and ventilation systems.

Why do I have a pigeon problem?

Over time, pigeons have come to rely on people for their food, water, and shelter. If your property is providing these pest birds with easy access to these things, they will take full advantage of it. Pigeons prefer to feed on seeds, but will eat whatever else that they come across. Things like birdbaths, bird feeders, clogged gutters, open trash containers, and compost piles may initially attract pigeons, who will most likely stay and create a nest once they find easy access to food and water.

Where will I find pigeons?

Pigeons are a common sight in both urban and rural areas, taking advantage of the ample food and shelter both environments provide. Pigeons nest above the ground and can be found along roof eaves, in chimneys, in vents, under bridges, and in outbuildings like garages and sheds. They also commonly reside in warehouses, barns, and feed mills.
