Cockroach Identification & Prevention

What are cockroaches?

Cockroaches are primitive insects that over time have learned to adapt to almost any indoor or outdoor environment. Generally, cockroaches have flattened, oval-shaped bodies with six legs covered in spines and antennae that are about the same length as their bodies. Some species are capable of flight, but most scurry from place to place. Cockroaches are scavengers and feed on nearly any food or non-food items they come across when invading properties in southern Nevada.

Are cockroaches dangerous?

Cockroaches travel through some less than sanitary conditions and carry a wide variety of bacteria, human pathogens, and parasites on their bodies and legs, making them very dangerous pests. Cockroaches contaminate food, food prep areas, and other surfaces as they travel throughout buildings. They are well known for spreading things like E. coli and salmonella, and their excrement and shed skins aggravate allergies and trigger asthma attacks, especially in young children. Cockroaches are also responsible for damaging personal property like upholstered furniture, curtains, blankets, books, and other belongings with their excrement and by chewing on them.

Why do I have a cockroach problem?

Don’t believe the stigma that having cockroaches in your home means it is dirty. While it may be true that cluttered homes offer a lot of hiding spots for cockroaches, the truth is that a cockroach infestation can occur in any home or commercial property. Cockroaches gain access through tiny cracks and crevices in the exterior walls or foundation while looking for food, water, and shelter. Another common way cockroaches get into your home or business is by hitchhiking inside bags, boxes, furniture, or used appliances. Additionally, some species are highly attracted to lighting and will accidentally make their way in through spaces around doors and windows.

Where will I find cockroaches?

Outdoors, cockroaches live outside in gardens, under mulch, in sewers, in garbage piles, in compost piles, and around drains. Once cockroaches get inside of your home or business, they tend to take up residence in areas that are typically warm and humid like kitchens, laundry rooms, bathrooms, basements, and crawlspaces. They are major pests in places like homes, hospitals, restaurants, and food processing facilities.

  • Always store pet food in plastic or metal containers with locking lids.

  • Pick up pet food between feedings.

  • Wash dirty dishes daily.

  • Make sure outdoor eating areas are free of food debris.

  • Reduce hiding spots for cockroaches by keeping clutter to a minimum.

  • Vacuum your floors, wipe down counters and tables, and remove trash from your property regularly.

Outdoor prevention tips

  • Make sure gutters and downspouts are directing water away from the exterior of your home or business.

  • Place a stone or crushed rock barrier between any mulch or soil and the foundation.

  • Place weather stripping around doors and windows.

  • Seal openings in the foundation, exterior walls, and roofline of your property.

  • Cut back shrubs, bushes, and trees away from the exterior of your home or business.

  • Keep tight-fitting lids on outdoor trash cans and compost bins. If possible, store them up off of the ground.
