Beetle Identification & Prevention

What are beetles?

Beetles are one of the most common insects living on earth. Worldwide there are around 350,000 species of beetles, with 30,000 living in the United States! Beetles come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and colors. All beetles have two pairs of wings, but the main distinction of the beetle is that their first pair of wings are hardened. These hardened wings provide a protective layer for their bodies, and their delicate “flying” wings are kept folded underneath. Beetles that invade your property in southern Nevada can be described as either fabric-infesting pests, pantry pests, or wood-destroying pests.

Are beetles dangerous?

Beetles are beneficial when living outside, helping in the decomposition of decaying plants and reducing the population of nuisance insects. When beetles move inside homes and other structures however, they become a nuisance and present a potential danger to people and property. Beetles contaminate food and damage clothing, fabrics, furniture, and wooden structures. Additionally, beetle larvae and their shed skins or excrement can trigger allergic reactions in people.

Why do I have a beetle problem?

Beetles find their way into your home or business in a variety of ways. Adults often enter after being drawn to your property by lights, then move inside through spaces around windows and doors. Beetles can also get in inside of furniture, wood, infested goods purchased from a store, or on plants infested with their eggs or larvae.

Where will I find beetles?

Adult beetles mainly live outside and feed on plant nectar and pollen. Beetle larvae that you find living inside feed on a variety of items, depending on their species. Beetle larvae feed on things like dry goods, fabrics, wood, and animal bi-products. In your home, beetles and their larvae gravitate to basements, closets, kitchens, pantries, and any storage areas.
